  • Need advice on best way to create DVD chapters to export to Encore

I’m inputting chapter numbers in Premier Pro 2 and while I love doing it here vs. in Encore it’s still tedious. The way I am doing it now is to place markers throughout the video and then come back later and number them so they will read as chapters markers when I export the video into Encore. The rub is that in the average video I have 40 or so markers and it’s difficult to number them without getting confused. To add a chapter number to a marker you have to double click the marker symbol and a box opens where you put the number for the chapter. But you quickly get lost as to which marker you added the number to. There is no indication I am aware of that a marker has been numbered. I would love it if the chapter number would appear on top of the marker symbol or something. So for now my system is to move the red line slowly along two or three markers at a time and number them…then move the red line so I can keep track of where I am. Surely there is a better way.

On a side note…I’ve noticed that Encore doesn’t seem to care what number you give a chapter in Premier…it simply sees any marker with a chapter number and assigns them numerically in Encore. I actually did a test and had a short clip with 10 markers that I gave all the number 2 in the chapter box. Sure enough…when I imported it into Encore it simply numbered them 1 to 10. Is this correct?

    Your perceptions are mostly accurate.
First, there is no translation of sequence marker numbers between Premiere and Encore. Entries in Premiere’s marker dialog box are text only and Encore is going to always keep markers in numerical sequence.
I may be dreaming, but there was/is a feature or plug-in that would allow for export of a text file listing the sequence times for each sequence marker.

Something I do when creating chapter markers in PPro is to first put down all the chapter markers without numbers. Then click on the first chapter marker, label it 1, then click the “next” button in the chapter marker window. It’ll take you to the next marker, then label it 2, and so on.

It goes pretty quick, and it’s easy to keep track of what number you’re on. You don’t have to even hit “enter” after putting the number in – just click “next”.
