  • Need advice on analog capture card

Posted by Rick Rintala on February 11, 2008 at 7:38 am

I am looking for a good analog capture card/ external breakout box to work with vegas 7.0. I used to use Pinnacle Studio plus, but want to get rid of that app and device and move to something better. Have been looking at the ADS Pyro A/V Link. Does it need additional software to work? Does Vegas actually help iniate the capture, or does the ADS card have its own application. Any comments/advice would be greatly appreciated.

why not simply use your camera? analogue into it, firewire out. cheaper than most standalone boxes.

that is, unless you have some specific reason you can’t?

You might consider the Canopus / Grass Valley ADVC 110 or 300. Personally I prefer these over the ADS model.

I have an older Canopus ADVC100 that’s a bi-directional Analog Digital converter and when I don’t need it for capturing, I have my external monitor connected to it. The 300 model also has a TBC in it to enhance the video when capturing old VHS tapes.

Just Google Grass Valley ADVC 110 or 300.

Hi if you’re on a tight budget the canopus ADVC55 does the convert for you. Assuming you don’t need analog out as well…

If your camera has a firewire passthrough (not all does) then you can use it.

Pyro A/V link works OK with vegas, I have one.
However I’d recommend against Pyro, because once you have some trouble, your’re stuck with your Pyro, beeing completely ignored by their techsupport. (At least I am :()

So consider buying canopus, even if it’s cost a bit more.

Thanks so much for the advice. I purchased the Canopus ADVC300. I was wondering is I could ask you a few more questions. With this device can you connect firewire from it to the PC and from it to the camera and capture video just like the camera is connected directly to the PC? Then, my next question is, when trying to capture analog video from say a VCR, does Vegas also capture that? Or will I be using the Edius Neo software included with the Canopus device. And last but not least, the Canopus has a RGB output for a monitor. If I select to view my preview on a external monitor in Vegas, does Vegas automatically find the monitor hooked up to the Canopus? Hoping you can answer these questions
    Thanks
    Rick
