For review, I have a Canon GL1, a GL2 and Sony VX2100. Using Vegas 5 for editing. My current procedure is to capture video with the camera it was shot in. I am also currently switching from Maxell tapes to Sony tapes (been using Maxell exclusivly for 3 years, just not sure about the quality, anymore). I am having each camera professionally cleaned before the switch. I am thinking about buying a basic mini DV camcorder to do all capture and print to tape. Any suggestions on camcorders that will do the job? I thought about a mini DV deck, but not sure I want to spend that much.

Also since all of my past projects are now stored on Maxell tapes, will it be a problem occasionally mixing the Maxell and Sony tapes in this new “capture” camcorder?

No. The issues of tape compatibility are for the most part, over.

Doug, you interested in a deck for capturing? I have an extra Panasonic AG-DV2000 deck I might be willing to part with. Once you’ve used a deck for capturing, I guarantee you’ll NEVER want to use a camera for capturing again. Send me an e-mail!
