Hello, Im a first time poster, and just recently was turned onto this website, and so far it has been a wealth of knowledge. So now for my question, we are currently running 8TB raid 5 through a PCI X powermac G5 2.0 ghz 6gb ram, connected to a highpoint tech 2224 card, and so far my experiences with it have been nothing short of frustrating. The raid would claim a drive has failed when it is still fine, random crashing and up till last week we were always able to rebuild our raid, then it claimed 2 drives failed simultaneously. Now we previously had replaced every piece of equipment minus the G5, to try and fix the previous random crashing. Weve gone through 2 cards, 1 enclosure, replaced all the cables, and replaced all the drives and issues still happened. So that was the final straw when i lost 90 hours footage, we keep our project files on two different locations so they were fine but i cant justify keeping this any longer.

Our editing set up is 2 mac pro 3.0ghz dual quad, and 2 3.06 imacs, right now they are connected via a gigabit ethernet switch. We where looking into Vtrak Promise raid and run fibre, but i learned we would also need to invest into a xsan and we cannot at this time add another 10k onto an already 16k investment. So now i am trying to find the best option to increase our data rate and a reliable, raid solution with excellent support.

The footage we work with is DV but i have been putting off the final switch to HD (DVCPro100 720p60), we do a 4 camera shoot and edit with multicam in post.

I looked at Caldigit and they seem to have a very reliable product and a good name behind it, but i didnt see a viable option that would increase our data rate, i could very well be mistaken. Thats why i came here, i know someone on here will have some awesome advice to point me in the right direction.

(P.S) sorry for the long post

    Thanks,
    Kyle Hoekstra

On a PCI-X mac, your only other choice for RAID 5 is the Areca 1100 series. The 1120ML supports RAID 3, 5 & 6 on up to 8 drives & has external “multilane” connectors (not eSATA).

You can find it at newegg.com, btw.

I am looking more to replace the current raid system we are using, then replace the card.

Since I’m very familiar with CalDigit I can tell you they make a PCI-x option for their HDOne (and HDPro). It is 100% hardware RAID, unlike the card you are currently using which is software RAID, because it has an independent CPU and cache built right in. The HDOne runs about 440MB/s in RAID 5. The other cool thing is if you upgrade to a PCIe MacPro all you need in another inexpensive CalDigit PCIe bridge card.

You should also look into metaLAN from Tiger Technology. It is a relatively inexpensive way to share media. I think someone already posted a link about this in the thread.
