Need a proper workflow settings to combine EX3 & Canon5DMarkII footage
I am working on a documentary. I have shot this film on XDCam EX3 & Canon 5D Mark II. This is shot in US, Africa, UK, Europe & Asia. Now I have almost completed the filming work & would work on editline. But I am not sure how to go about it. I use FCP & through log & transfer I can get all the footage to my Mac. But since I am using 2 different formats thats EX3 is on 25fps & Canon is on 24fps, I am not sure what settings should I keep for the timeline. Ultimately I want to go on highest quality as I am planning to release this film on theaters. I have used all the film lenses for both the cameras so footage is pretty amazing but I dont want to loose the quality is post through transfering shots from one format to another. Right now I am getting ProRes 422 HQ option on log & transfer for Canon footages but not for EX3 footages. So I am confused… So please guide me. I am an independant film maker & I have been making small documentry films, but this is the first big film that I am doing, so your expertise would be extremely helpful. Hi Prashat,
You need to have all the stuff on a common time-base to work on FC, so, first you have to decide in which time-base will you edit.
p25or p24?

Hi Rafael,
Most of the footage is on Canon 5DMarkII 24p, as I was advised by one of my colleges that film format is 24p & not 25p. So suppose if I use 24p, then could you advise me the work flow & the entire process. Plus after the edit in what format should I export the entire timeline to make it workable for release in film theaters. -
If you go p24, you have to;
– Convert your H264p24 to Prores p24.
– Convert your EX-1 p25 to Prores p25.
– Conform the Prores p25 stuff to p24.
Then you can edit all on a p24 sequence.If you want to go p25:
– Convert the H264 p24 to Prores p25 (Compressor).
– Edit together with the EX-1 stuff on a p25 sequence.What I can not tell you is what is better for you in terms of distribution: p24 or p25.

I can convert H264 to Prores 422
But I need to know how to Convert your EX-1 p25 to Prores p25.
& then how to Conform the Prores p25 stuff to p24. -

Use MPGStreamclip (free) for the conversion.
Export as QT Movie. Select Prores and let the rest of the setting as they are, except “Interlaced Scaling”, that you must UNCHECK.[Prashant Hiraskar] “hen how to Conform the Prores p25 stuff to p24.”
Import the p25 clips and “Conform” to p24.
That’s an instant operation.
FYI, you should duplicate your clips before doing this.
You can not Conform back to p25.

Edit all in ProRes HQ, universal and easy on the machine. If you want to organize your footage, make a bin for the all the XDCam footage, and one for the DSLR stuff.
