Need a Product Review for MacBook Pro, W/ Intel Core Duo Processor
Posted by Dave on July 20, 2006 at 1:42 amI am thinking about buying a new computer, apple v. pc, and want to know if anyone has experience with the MacBook Pro, W/ Intel Core Duo Processor with 2 megs ram?
Want to know specifically how fast you feel it is with rendering times on mid level comps?
Thanks

What’s a mid level comp? What codec are you going to edit with?

Unless you plan to install Windows and run AE for windows on these new Macs, it’s too soon to really know. After Effects on the Mac isn’t universal yet, so it would run slowly via Rosetta at best.
In a perfect world, Adobe would have AE universal plus CS3 ready to go universal when Apple is expected to show its first top of the line “Mactel” desktop models in early August. From what I read, that’s not gonna happen.
I’m not certain when the software will catch up with the hardware… maybe first quarter, 2007?

July 20, 2006 at 2:27 amNot exactly sure what you mean. I though that after effects already runs on the mac, so I wanted to know how it runs with the new chips in the MacBook Pro.
I don’t know Mac’s hence the question.
I work on AE on the P.C. for home dvd special effects that I make with my kids, purely hobby, but I do a good job.
Have watched the total training video for 6.5 two times which is like 50 hours of training.

Adobe is not going to release a Universal Version of the software until the next major release. Either a 7.5 or 8.0 release of After Effects. So the PowerPC version of AE will run very slowly on an Intel Mac. If you have a Windows version of AE, it will run faster on a Mac running Windows XP in the short term.
My question to you is what is a mid-level comp and what codec? For me an average, mid-level comp is 100 layers with 3D cameras and at least 6 lights for a 30 second spot. A “heavy duty” comp is 700+ layers with light bursts, trails particles, etc…..
I only run AE on desktop workstations as laptops are far too slow for even my “basic” comps.

July 20, 2006 at 3:10 amOkay Walter,
I’ve gotta ask… what’s a “high level” project in your world? What’s the most layers you’ve ever put in one 30 second (or less) project?

July 21, 2006 at 8:19 pmI am currently running AE 7 (mac) on a new 15 inch macbook pro with 1GB of RAM. I can confirm that AE performs really sluggishly. I am planning on installing windows through boot camp until the new universal mac version is released.

July 26, 2006 at 10:26 pmI can’t even get my copy of AE 6.5, or AE 7.0 demo to run on my macbook Pro… I had picked it up in hopes of being able to do work while away from home with a bit of a speed bump from my G4 powerPC… No matter what I try I can’t get it to startup. So, stick with the powerPC for now is my advice!
