Need a Mixer?
Just curious…I always see mixers in edit bays, although, I don’t have one at work nor do I have one at home.
I was just wondering why someone would need one. I would assume if you are going out to tape it may be necessary. I know you can use a mixer to move the sliders on the virtual mixer in FCP as well. But if you don’t do those things, is there good reason to have one?

I use them because I never want to adjust the audio levels on the Mac. We leave the Mac set to Unity at all times and adjust the volume in the room via the mixer volume controls.
We also feed multiple audio sources into our Mixer so we can listen to multiple pieces of equipment at the same time. Our FCP system, a VTR, a DVD Player, etc…
And we use the Mixer to control analog audio outputs to the VTRs that take analog audio input.
