Why is it not possible to work with compressed avi or quicktime files in Premiere Pro 1.5
In PPro there are only uncompressed codecs .When i have many tapes to capture i run fast out of space on my harddisk. ( 600 GB )

I need this codec also very urgently and i do not want to change to FCP, where there is this
codec already for a long time.
Please BMD, tell us that you work on a compressed avi codec for PPro for soon.

    Thanks

    Hi Oli and Claus-Peter,

We want to add compressed codec support but these codecs are not included with Window XP so it is not as though we can just add support for a format which everyone can then use. For example, some Windows video applications can capture in the HDV format as the Microsoft Firewire drivers include HDV support. However this support is only available via Firewire and not via any other I/O such as HD-SDI.

This contrasts to the Mac platform where a variety of codecs are available through QuickTime and these codecs are available to all applications. The HDV codec on Mac is primarily for use with Firewire but also can be used via HD-SDI with some limitations.

We are actively working on adding compressed codec support to our DeckLink Windows drivers. It’s tricky and we’re trying to find the best solution for the majority of customers. It is fortunate that the cost of uncompressed storage has fallen and makes this less of an issue than it once was but we still want to add compressed support as we know it would be very useful.

Just curious: since you support the BMD codec in QTime with Premiere; any possibility of supporting a compressed QTime codec in Premiere? Motion- or Photo- JPEG would be just fine! Would be particularly awesome for HD work.

It’s good that storage costs are falling, but a light or variable compression option would still be a great plus.

One approach might be near-invisible 2:1, 3:1 or 4:1, supported by an “offline” rating (6:1 ? 12:1?)that would play from the same timeline. Or capture to / playback from DV avi format would be useful.

However much disc capacities expand and costs fall, there never ever seems to be enough storage or enough speed; it would be a shame not to push on and try to solve this. Are there 3rd party mjpeg / mpeg4 / other codecs that could help?

Hope you manage to find a way to do this!

    Thanks
