  • Need a codec reminder – 10-bit vs. Animation

    Hi all,
Working on a project in FCP 6.0.5 where I dropped in a lower third that was created in AE 7.0 (rendered in Animation codec w/straight alpha channel). The timeline settings are as follows:

    – 720×480 – open timeline
    – 29.97 – no fields
    – 10-bit uncompressed
    – Render settings are “render all YUV material in high-precision YUV”

The bulk of the timeline has DVCPRO HD 720p footage that FCP resized for 720×480 (which is what I need to deliver the edit in). I placed the lower third on the timeline, and for some reason, it doesn’t look as sharp as it should (it looked aliased, compressed). I have done this exact thing before, with different results, where the lower third looked perfectly sharp on a 10-bit timeline (as sharp as it did coming out of AE). My only option, it seemed, was to duplicate the timeline, change the codec to Animation, and re-render. This was the only way to achieve razor sharp lower thirds.

    Is FCP glitching?

The Alpha Channel of your Animation is only 8b whyle your footage is 10b.
You my try Sheer or any of the Avid codecs that supports 10b Alpha channel.

What I don’t understand is… WHY is this not working anymore? Before I got perfectly sharp graphics using the exact same sequence/render settings (graphics in ANIMATION, timeline in 10-bit, render in full precision YUV). Only now, my graphics look aliased. What’s happening?

I went back to an older version of FCP (5.0.4) and tested the lower third there. Whaddaya know… it looks FANTASTIC! This is bizarre. What gives…

Are you talking about in your Canvas? Do you have it sized to 100%? Do you have any Overlays on?
