I was very pleased with my 8 drive SATA RAID 0 tower until my Power Mac died so I am stuck with a useless 8-port PCI-X Sonnet Tempo-X eSATA RAID controller card.

So now I have purchased a used Mac Pro which is PCI-E and need suggestions on how I can get my 8 drive tower back up and running. So far I haven’t had much success finding any 8 port PCI-E SATA cards. Any suggestions?

    Thanks in advance!
    Ian.

Any PCIe card should work. CalDigit’s card is a good one I know. Doesn’t matter how many drives you’ve got in the array.. only need one port for it AFAIK.

    Jerry,
It sounds like he is not using a port multiplier chassis and has separate connections for each drive in the array.
These are much faster than the more common port multiplier units. I have a Sonnet 4 port card for this purpose, but I believe they do not have an 8 port model.

I think Highpoint makes a RocketRaid 8 port model.

Yes. You are correct. I have a separate connection for each drive.
If anyone can suggest an inexpensive 8 port that would be great (if they make one in PCI-E), or if yall have any other suggestions, such as an inexpensive 4 external port, or other alternatives I might look into that would be great. I’m a little behind on drive technology, so any suggestions would be great.

    John,

Unfortunately, that one has eight internal ports. The ports would be on the silver thing on the other side if they were external.

Ian- Also check out Firmtek. I know they have a four port.

Good catch DRW. Ones with 8 external ports are rare. I actually thought that one had 4 internal and 4 external.

For such cards you can get an inexpensive backplane adapter that connects to the internal ports. You lose a PCI slot, of course, but you can use all the ports, both internal and external.
