Need 3D plug in for After Effects
Posted by Doug Normington on June 30, 2006 at 12:31 pmHi,
Can you recommend a 3D plug in for after effects? I need to extrude and bevel font and fly it around.
thanks
NORMCO

June 30, 2006 at 1:21 pmOne option is Zaxwerks Invigorator (see the Cow forum on this package). I have the Invig Pro option, which you upgrade from Invig Classic, which you used to get with AE (6.5). I am not sure if you get it free with 7.0. Difference is that with classic, you must import your text from Adobe Illustrator, then manipulate it with Invig. There is also the pro animator flavor, which others say is better than Invig Pro version.

June 30, 2006 at 2:17 pmI use invigorator all the time. I think it might have come free only with the Pro version of 6 (or 6.5) I assume it comes with 7 also — at least when I bought Pro6 it came with and I’ve been using it ever since. With that version you don’t HAVE to bring in text from Illustrator — there is a text generator built-in too.
Other ‘free’ options… Blender? You can get a demo of Cinema4d I think that will work for a few days or so… better dbl check that and see if you can actually export though. But for ease of use with simple texturing and beveling, check out Zaxwerks… great products.

Unfortunately, that is not the case. AE 7.0 does not ship with the Zaxwerks plugins.

June 30, 2006 at 3:56 pmIf all that is needed is a simple extrude/fly around, you can get away with using the shatter effect, using settings that don’t cause it to explode to the ground by turning off gravity, etc. Zaxwerks really is superior, and nice for a lot of reasons (including loading 3D models into AE), but for simple stuff, I’ve definitely gotten away with shatter. Another plus is that it will multi-machine render without difficulty.

July 1, 2006 at 12:49 pmHi everyone,
Invigorator does work as a plug-in for both Mac and PC versions of After Effects. Some of the advantages of Invigorator Pro have been pointed out. You can see a side-by-side breakdown on the Zaxwerks site.
Another option you should consider is Zaxwerks ProAnimator, a stand-alone application for Mac or PC. It includes the same easy but powerful modeling and texturing abilities as Invigorator, but adds some motion control capabilities you can’t get anywhere else. (No keyframes. No limits to the number of objects that can be controlled. Fast , easy creation of very complex moves.) And did I mention that as of version 4, it’s an After Effects plug-in too?
Hope this helps.
