  • Nearing a billion “websites” out there…

Was doing research for a speaking engagement, and stumbled into a site that tracks net statistics live (sorta).

Obviously, these are largely projections and estimations. The counter doesn’t really rachet when a website goes “live” – in fact even the definition of what they’re counting is clearly disclosed as:
(By “Website” we mean unique hostname (a name which can be resolved, using a name server, into an IP Address). It must be noted that around 75% of websites today are not active, but parked domains or similar. [1])

That said, a billion of anything is a milestone. And it looks like the threshold will be crossed this month..

If you enjoy this type of silly distraction – and want see the live readout of this and other moderately interesting (also imprecise, I’m sure) stats – check the site out…

Of the 25% not parked, I wonder how many now have either embedded or links to streaming video in place?

    The mind boggles.

    Enjoy.
