ND on windows revisited
Hi all….well we went ahead and put ND on large windows and left it up for a couple days….here was a message I got after we had taken it down:

The owner complained about the ND filter leaving smears on the communal areas windows. As it was adhered with Windex, in my mind the windows should have been bloody spotless but I did check and to be fair, they weren’t kidding. I paid for them to be cleaned but the cleaners even said: “Oh yer, these things’ll eat into the grain of the glass. If you leave them up too long it can do permanent damage.” Sooo, yer. A little worried about the state of the windows in Room 57 once we take down the ND.
———————————————————————————-Anyone ever see this? I’m taking a look tomorrow and will try a bit of cleaning to see what it is, but we left up about 5 large windows for 2 weeks and I am a bit nervous when we try to pull it down!

No, I have never seen this or even heard of it. I find it hard to believe that an actual glass surface would be in any way compromised by application of gel. If we were talking about a resin or plastic surface, maybe. There may have been residue, but it would just be sitting on the surface of the glass and would squeegee right off with some water.

Turns out the gel that had been on for a couple weeks did have a hard time pulling off and we had a bunch of small pieces we had to scrape off but everything worked out fine and the glass looks great.
Lawsuit averted…

I wonder if some kind of separation product like no-stick cooking spray would have helped… but then again, it may have made the view thru the glass more distorted as well. Maybe using car wax first on the glass and buffing it?…
Modern windows often are laminated layers of alternating plastic and glass components. But I can’t imagine the indoor facing surface to be a plastic one.

Are you saying gel stayed on windows for a couple of weeks just by using Windex? Hmmmm…
I’ve never been able to get gel to stay put longer than about 24 hours using soapy water.
