March 8, 2013 at 2:18 amThat’s fine, I’m disagreeing with you in context of the OP’s troubleshooting. SATA throughput is more than adequate even with the least compressed REDCODE 3:1 for single track edits. Firewire also has adequate throughput for single track edits for REDCODE 6:1 or more compressed (as long as the drive is full-sized, 5400rpm or mini drives typically can’t push that throughput with Firewire).
I’ll concede my original answer is more vague and makes it sound ideal in a broader range of applications which it isn’t but it shouldn’t be the reason a single RED file is playing back inconsistently.

March 8, 2013 at 2:33 amFair enough – I have observed cases on MacOS 10.6/.7 of RED playback (really, any thing on the disk, but RED is big data enough for it to me more directly observable) being affected by the FW800 controller bridge on some external drive housings, whereas the same file played back on a non-external disk were dandy – hopefully with that in mind a path to joy can be found.

March 8, 2013 at 4:00 pmJudging by the fact that turning on the Red Rocket makes no image play at all,, I’d say that it isn’t working.
Try reinstalling the drivers, moving it to a different PCIe slot, etc.
Does the red footage play smoothly in Redcine-X?

March 8, 2013 at 8:01 pmthanks for all the replies.
the clips are playing nice and smooth in redcineX. also final cut pro x seems to handle them better, but not perfect. btw, a colleague is using a (theoretically slower) mac without a red rocket, and he doesnt have any problems! what the hell..
i tried to reinstall all the drivers and plugins (again), but still no change. Really don’t know what to do anymore

March 8, 2013 at 9:06 pmBefore I switched to the Z820 I had a 2008 Mac Pro / Quadro 4000 / 24GB ram and a Max Digital raid array. I could play back Red 4K clips just fine at 1/2 resolution (2K).
Of course the Z820 system has no probs either.
Wish I could be of more help.
