I’m wondering if anyone else has done something like this, and how successful they’ve been.

Current setup: 2 Intel Mac Pro’s in a classroom. Having moved from SD to HD, I upgraded the internal HDD’s. I now have six HDD’s sitting on a shelf of assorted sizes.

What I would like to do: I would like to find a NAS that I could install the six HDD’s into and setup as a JBOD/SPAN, and use the NAS as the Time Machine backup for both of the machines so that if we ever loose clips / render files (something my students seem to be very able to do), we can get them off the NAS. Would be using a gigabit router, of course.

I’ve already read the instructions on how to get Time Machine to run on an unsupported NAS over on Apple Clinic, so it seems pretty doable.

Has anyone else tried a setup like this and had success? If so, what NAS enclosure are you using / do you recommend?

    yes it is possible.
Drobo has a new unit out that will accomidate all those drives.
I back all 3 of my machines thru a NAS in my network with time machine. As long as your computers see the drives you should be ok
    Hope this helps

As a warning, many people have issues with Time Machine running while using FCP. Not everyone, and not a majority, but a handful. So proceed with caution.

Kent – I assume you’re referring to the “Drobo Pro” unit? It looks interesting, though this idea of BeyondRaid is a little odd. But it seems to have gotten good reviews. Just wish the bare enclosure was a bit cheaper than $1200 . . . oh well, you get what you pay for.

Shane -I have also seen the inconsistency in Time Machine / FCP conflicts. I hate it when problems arise without consistency or clear cause . . .
