Narration
Posted by Kiran Goldman on February 7, 2011 at 8:58 pmDoes anyone know if it is possible to record narration through the log and capture window rather than by using the voiceover tool? How should I connect the mixer to the computer in order for the log and capture window to see it?
thanks!

February 7, 2011 at 9:46 pmYou can not record audio using log and capture.
One way is to record the narration is by connecting a professional microphone to a camcorder. That is what I would recommend.
FCP help explains how to set up your computer to Record Voiceover.
Setting Up Your Computer to Record Voiceover
You can set up your computer to use the Voice Over tool in a studio, or you can set up a portable computer so you can record in the field. The process for setting up your computer to record voiceover is described in the following sections.Stage 1: Installing or Connecting an Audio Interface
Stage 2: Connecting a Microphone and Microphone Preamplifier
Stage 3: Opening the Voice Over Tool and Choosing Audio Input Settings
Stage 4: Choosing an Audio Track and Duration for Your Voiceover
Stage 5: Determining the Offset of Your Audio Interface
Stage 6: Plugging In Your Headphones

You can and I have done it but I don’t recommend it. If you have a mixer with either a digital or analog line level output you can attach it to your I/O card (Decklink AJA, Matrox etc) input. In Log & capture you need to have audio enabled and video diabled with uncontrolled device. I had a reference video signal attached to the I/O card and probably an SDI input, even though I wasn’t capturing video. Not sure if they are critical.
However, rather than use either the L&C or VO tool, try using Sound Track Pro instead or an external device like a Zoom or even the iPhone. There are lots of alternatives to record narration. I never use FCP for this task.

I did say this in my original post but I deleted it because I would not do it that way.

Fair enough. I was being literal but hopefully discouraging.

February 8, 2011 at 2:03 amKiran’s comment “How should I connect the mixer to the computer in order for the log and capture window to see it?” made me change it. Didn’t want to cause any more confusion.

February 8, 2011 at 4:38 amI use a USB microphone and the VO Tool, and a blank timeline with 1 hour of slug. That makes an audio clip on the timeline. I drag that into the Browser and I have my clip.
OR…
Same microphone, only I capture with QT Pro, and then add the file to the project.
But the first way is faster and darn easy.
GET OUT OF YOUR AVID HEAD… I know that you use the Capture Tool in Avid to do this…FCP works differently.
