    I’ve got a pretty big peripheral fetish and just picked up the new Kong nanoKONTROL2, which is an external MIDI control surface with sliders and faders and whatnot. Here’s my config, followed by a question.

    (1) Configuration is easy enough, but entirely manual. Here’s my config file:

    Korg_nanoKONTROL2.xml.zip

    //Windows7/Users/n/AppData/Local/Sony/VegasPro/10.0/Generic Control Maps/Korg_nanoKONTROL2.xml

    It varies from a straight literal configuration in a couple of ways: (1) the transport control REC key is mapped to ENTER (PLAY is mapped to SPACEBAR) and (2) the track REC keys are mapped to switch automation mode to Latch. Just my personal preference.

    (2) There’s one annoying glitch: Vegas seems to not receive initially small slider/fader movements. Only initially. The workaround is to pop a slider with a large/quick movement to get started, then you can proceed as delicately/subtly as you want after that. As my config shows, I normally mix in Latch mode, so automation envelope nodes all have a big spike at the beginning, which is easy enough to delete when done, but still…it’d be nice not to have to do this workaround at all. Any ideas?

    AhHa. Figured it out:

    Since the nanoKontrol is an inexpensive ($60) and small controller, Vegas has no idea where a slider/fader is set on initialization. So when you activate a track to receive controller input, it waits until it sees a slider/fader value that matches the current value before moving. So if your slider is down as far as it goes (- inf. dB), but the track volume envelop is set at 0.0 dB, you’d need to move the slider through 0.0 dB to get the envelope to react. Vegas is basically waiting to calibrate the slider before it gets going.

    Like everything, it’s a matter of learning to use the tool correctly! I’m still working on that part…

    That’s cool! Thanks for the post. So are you able to set all faders to work with Vegas? I know in ProTools you can only get 8 faders to work at one time. I’d like to have an 18 track setup using the nanokontroler’s knobs and faders.
    I bought Vegas Pro 9 for video editing and now that I’m trying to use Vegas as a DAW for live sound I’m wondering if it’s “the way to go” over other DAW’s.
    Thanks again! ~JVonD
