Naming “NO NAME” volumes on P2 Store
Posted by Steve Roberts on September 28, 2006 at 8:32 pmI am using a Panasonic P2 store with FCP powerbook. When I plug the P2 store into my Powerbook, the volumes show up as “NO NAME”. Is there a way to re-name the volumes on the P2 store before off loading it?
I have tried to name the cards in my computer, but when they are formated for re-use they lose that information. Thanks,
Steve

September 28, 2006 at 8:37 pmNope. And you really don’t need to. Once you offload one (at like 16 NO NAMEs will appear) just color that folder RED so that you know you alread copied that one.

September 28, 2006 at 10:50 pmIt would be great but just not in the cards with the way it’s setup now. I would put this on the request list for down the road though. Perhaps a simple automatic “roll” naming scheme the way most digital still cameras work.

September 29, 2006 at 1:15 amIt really would be great to have the camera keep a running tab on “reels”. I am out in the desert offloading footage from several P2 stores. Fatigue keeps me guessing weather I have copied all of the “volumes” to a computer hard drive before formatting the P2 store.
It would also be helpful to be able grab all of the volumes and copy them at once. If each volume had a specific name, it would be easy.Noah, how do I send my suggestions to Panasonic?
Thanks!

September 29, 2006 at 8:28 amIf it helps, I use the Sidebar in the Finder window when copying P2 volumes to my archive drive. I have found that the ‘NO NAME’ drives appear in chronolgical order (top to bottom) from the store. The desktop appears random, especially if you have lots of other icons there.

September 29, 2006 at 6:42 pmI create a specific folder for each “No Name” volume and drop it in there.
The folder’s name usually consists of a one-word “slug” to ID the project, followed by an 8-digit date (year month day) and a letter to signify the sequence (a, b, c, etc).

October 1, 2006 at 9:19 pmYou really need to get P2Genie (https://p2genie.andersholck.com). Its a utility which will offload all the P2 Volumes on your P2Store with one command. Also will copy them to two drives so you have backup.

October 1, 2006 at 9:29 pmP2 Genie to offload onto your P2 Store? Uhhh…no. The P2 store is a stand alone device that you insert the card and press START to offload it. The P2 Genie is only if you offload the card with the use of a laptop.

I also thought as you do until last night when I archived 9 cards from the P2 store using the P2 Genie, just went off and had a cuppa whilst it did it.
The only unresolved issue is that it did not get all the cards in chronological order.Roddy Jamieson
