    My specs:

    Windows 7 Professional 64 bit
    Intel Core i7 950@3.07 (8)
12Gb RAM (2Gb used at idle)
    Nvidia Quadro FX 1800
Full 1080p HD 27″ monitor (DVI cable. dumb, i know)
    2 hard drives
    1Tb and 2Tb
75% free and 50% free, respectively
data transfer rate for primary drive rated 5.6 of 7.9 (avg of 5MB/sec, I think. i could be looking at the wrong numbers)
over 70 processes running at startup

    My problem:

I am testing some render quality options in Premiere and Encoder CS5, using 720p and 1080p AVCI-100 MXF source. I render out using MOV set to PNG compression. For the 720, I use the MOV HD preset, and change the compression from Photo-JPEG to PNG. For the 1080, I do the same, but also change the size to 1920×1080. Then I start the queue (why is that spelled that way?). The final output is to my secondary drive.

The result when I play it back from my secondary drive is a severe lag when I play it back in QuickTime, and no video whatsoever when I play it back in Media Player.

The odd thing is, I can render out the same sequences using the same settings but with Photo-JPEG retained, and the videos play back just fine (or so it appears…).

My machine should never have an ounce of trouble playing back anything, let alone a minute-long HD QuickTime file. Anyone have any ideas?

    Hi Tim,

Just guessing but having the export settings the way you do might be like trying to play back an uncompressed image sequence almost.

What is the purpose of those specific settings? What is the end result (delivery) that you are wanting to accomplish? There may be much better export options available.

Actually, the PNG compression setting is not the format setting. It ends up a fully self-contained “standard” MOV. It’s not a “PNG sequence.”

The purpose is to be able to test the viability of a new HD workflow at my workplace. We have one computer capable of handling HD (hardware and software) and we are rendering some test videos to see if we want to make the full jump.

The full uncompressed setting is designed to show just what the computer can do. We may likely end up exporting at Photo-JPEG once we get a workflow down, but for now, we want the quality maxxed out to show the execs just how efficient our proposal will be.

Look at the specs. It’s a beast. But for some odd reason, we are having problems. And a beast that lags like that isn’t convincing anyone, at the moment. We’d like it to run full-capacity for when we pitch the idea.

    Hi Tim,

You might consider the Avid DNxHD codec which is now available for download, if you are simply trying to come up with a high-quality solution for mastering/output.

Well…I’d be curious to know what the filesize is as even a PNG QT clip can be quite large and a non-RAID harddrive system will have all it can do to play it out.

Also, keep in mind that you have a single processor that was introduced in early 2009. It may be a very solid 4 core/8 thread proc, but it’s not invincible in terms of HD formats in QT…

I suspect that the MJPEG material is somewhat smaller and it’s a codec that Windows has in its system, whereas PNG QT files are a codec unique to QT…hence no playback in WMP.
