I am trying to piece together my ultimate computer system, mostly what I am looking for are hardware recommendations, motherboards, CPUs, graphics processors, etc. Not really concerned about monitors, and periferals, I’ll add that with what ever money i have left over(if any). Kinda thinking out of the BOXX here (pun intended), don’t really need a name brand box, they always seem to add up to a lot more money once you get them properly configured. But i’m open to all suggestions. Also I’m trying to keep the cost of the system under $3,000. Oh and yes… it needs to be a PC. No offence Mac guys it’s just and internal IT thing(out of my control).

    Any suggestion appreciated!!!
Can’t wait to see what you guys come up with!
    Thanks – Kevin

Search the COW for “system”. This sort of thing has been discussed before, and can be summarized thusly:

    – get as much RAM as you can.
    – get a fast multiprocessor system, with Nucleo Pro software.
    – a few MHz here and there isn’t a big deal – get more RAM for the price.
    – Vista is bad, go with XP.
    – graphics card isn’t as big a deal as with 3D, since AE doesn’t use OpenGL as much or as well.
    – fast drives hep accessing footage, but they’re not as crucial as with an editing system.

Because many things are handled differently (hardware-wise) in AE comps, mograph artists don’t sweat the details of a system. Fast procs, more RAM, fast drive, Nucleo Pro.

2 Gigs of RAM will probably be enough for you.

There is a low ceiling on the amount of RAM that you can use with XP. Motherboards can support gigs upon gigs – but XP can only support 4 and takes special boot switches in the ini files to get it to use 3 of the 4 gigs.

Here is an article by Microsoft on the limits of OSs in regards to RAM.

The time proven way of getting a system to do what you want is to identify your software app you want to run and get the developer’s recommendations (adobe.com). Then find out what OS your app runs on and get that developer’s recommendations — hopefully they will be close.

Once you get that leg work done, run the list past this group or a hardware group before you spend any money.
