I have a G4 (500 Megahertz) bought eons ago – maybe 2000 – that has performed like a tank after a shakeout period. I only use the computer for editing using Final Cut Pro (the 4.5 version using OSX 10.3.9).

Now I am having a problem I hope someone can help me with. When I click with my mouse either shutdown, restart, sleep or force quit, I get no response. I am only able to shutdown the system by pushing the button on the front of the G4. All the other selections that appear when I click on the Apple, respond to my mouse click and run fine.

I have run Disk Warrior and run Disk Utility on the drive that has my operating software on it.

Has some pre-set or preference been inadvertently changed that needs resetting? What other things might be causing this to happen?

To my knowledge I have made no change in any setting.

One thing I must mention, this started happening after my building had a power surge that knocked out all my power and blew out my surge protector. A power line was knocked down by a large branch.

I would really appreciate whatever input comes to mind. Thanks.

Nine years is an extremely good life for a computer. It may be time to consider a new Mac.

    Chris –

I just tried the link you gave me and I was told Apple Support could not find it.

    Wayne –

I could not agree with you more. I had been planning on replacing this system after Mac World announcements but my local dealer advised me to wait until after NAB when no new platforms were announced at Mac World. If I can’t resolve this issue though I might be forced to act before then. I am concerned that turning the system off and on with the button on the front of the computer might have not be good for the long term health of this system.

that link just worked for me

    here’s another one:

    https://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=95037

or google “Reset Power Mac PMU”

it often solves sudden, unexplainable hardware weirdness.
