My HDV Success Story

Just thought I would chime in with an HDV success story: I have finally finished a very long HDV project that I began working on 18 months ago in July of 2005. Earlier that spring I traveled the entire 8,000 mile Silk Road by motorcycle and filmed 80 one-hour HDV tapes in the process. The final product is a 4×50-minute documentary series for broadcast. I shot all of the video using a Sony FX-1. After returning to the U.S. I captured and cut rough sequences in DV on a Powerbook and later upgraded to a G5, recaptured as HDV and finished the project in standard HDV fashion. I will be rendering the final sequences in DVCPROHD timelines and bringing them into another facility to layoff to tape in that format.
All in all I spent about 4.5 months on each 50-minute show, editing an average of 10hrs per week at home. So each show took me about 4.5 weeks of work in real time. By comparison, as the editor of

That’s awesome to hear. My experiences with HDV have been similar – great results for the dollar investment.
Will be particularily interested to hear how the selling process goes and what return you are able to make for all your hard work.

Thanks so much for posting an HDV success story. I’ve only been seeing posts related to the negatives of the format. Your story and output is inspiring. I’m directing a doc on a group of highly-eccentric local fishermen on the island where I reside, and using a Z1 with FCP to bring it together. It’s as run-and-gun as it can be, as I’m the only one on the project, just completing it’s 10th month of primary photograpy in HDV.
Bravo. I hope your program gets picked up. Having done a yearlong round-the-world trip with the vast gang of backpackers I’m always thrilled to see someone who’s gone a step or two further than the average world traveller. Thanks.

Hi Guys,
about to start a similar style project, filming an artist in the Antarctic. Am hoping to use a Z1 if possible. The final output will be SD. Is it worth filming in HDV mode, should i just use DV all the way? have been using Z1 in dv mode for 18months now, footage looks good. I know this is the wrong forum, gut everyone here know everything!!chers
