My G5 gets tired
Posted by Motzzz on October 9, 2005 at 10:31 pmIt’s strange. If I need to export a sequence I can only do it in the mornings or if I haven’t turned on the mac for about 6 hours. Otherwise FCP crashes on export.
Anybody know why I’m having this problem.
It would be after about 4-5 hours of editing and then these crashes happen. I wake up in the morning and it’s good to go..rendering/exporting works perfect.

October 9, 2005 at 10:34 pmWhat happens if you just RESTART the Mac before you try the export?

October 9, 2005 at 10:36 pmSame thing…just crashes. It’s like it needs some sleep or something.
By the way here is what I have
Mac G5 1.8 dual

That would actually tend to indicate a HEAT-RELATED problem.

October 9, 2005 at 11:36 pmYa you might be right. It’s in a cool place (basement) right now. Any suggestions? Can I install more fans?

I think the G5 is pretty well “fanned”, but that won’t help much if you have a defective component (chip?) or any small parts (chips again?) didn’t get the proper “silicone gel treatment” in relation to the heat-sink(s).
I have heard of certain brands of memory chips that don’t work well with the Mac.
Did you (or an installer) add any extra memory to your Mac?OTOH, there’s always the “Trash the FCP preferences” solution for many FCP “oddities”.
Click the following link for instructions.

A great way to do this is to use “FCP Rescue” a free Apple Script that will Trash the Preferences for you (and restore nearly all of your user settings afterward).
There are versions for FCPro & FCExpress.Download these free Apple Scripts at

October 10, 2005 at 12:00 amI’ve had a problem similar to yours. I tracked it down to a pair of Lacie FW800 drives that were over heating. The longer I left the system running, the more difficult it was to get a finished project out of the computer. Even though the Lacie drives are in the open in the room, they tend to run hot. They have no internal fans and rely on the aluminum cases to act as a heat sink. I put a small fan on them to help cool them down on days when they get a little cranky. After running the fan a short time, and allowing them to cool, everything gets back to being reliable again. I don’t know what kinds of drives you’re running, but make sure that they are cool and happy. It does sound like a heat related drive problem. Might be worth a try.

October 10, 2005 at 5:58 pmI would concur, its heat and its most likely the hard drives no matter which ones you are using. Buy a fan.
