  • My FCPX no longer showing ‘used clip’ ranges with orange line.

I’m on FCPX 10.4.10 here and I’ve noticed recently (and annoyingly) that used ranges of clips are no longer showing their orange line indicator in the browser. I’ve tried switching that option off and on again in View > Browser > Used Media Ranges, but it is definitely selected as on at the moment. Favourites and keywords are working fine with respective green and blue lines – just the highly useful orange not showing 🙁

Anyone seen similar quirk or can offer any fixes/suggestions?

This is one of those things I’ve noticed over last few projects but as they were quite small I had a moment’s ponder and got on with task at hand. Now I’m on a bigger piece, and it’s becoming a serious nuisance but I can’t place exactly when the issue began – it’s possibly since the update from 10.4.9, or it’s possibly since installing a few new FX Factory plug-ins – or perhaps it has nothing to do with either.

ps on OS Mojave here so not planning on moving to 10.5 very soon.

Sometimes it happens to me. Close and reopen fcpx. ?

Also, try trashing and then resetting up your preferences. To trash prefs, hold option and command while launching fcpx

This may be obvious, but verify your intended project is loaded in the timeline. Unlike favorites, rejects and keyword collections, used media is only specific to the currently-loaded project.

Frank: This has happened over several projects and restarts unfortunately.

Jeremy: I hate trashing prefs because I’ve got everything set up how I like it, but I fear I may have to try this.

Joe: Yes, I know it’s easy to be caught out on this, but I’m definitely in the project I should be seeing the ‘used’ lines.

A quick update. The orange lines DO sometimes appear for a while on restarts. Would I be right in thinking that this suggests a bug or a problem with a particular installed plug-in rather than a preferences issue (which wouldn’t have them working sometimes but not others?). And yes, I’ve checked and rechecked that I’m not looking at the wrong project when it happens.

There’s a new app called FCPX Manager that will allow you to turn off all your plugins and see if that’s an issue. IF you turn them off and the lines come back consistently, then you can start turning on plugins one by one to see which is the culprit. I haven’t heard of plugins causing an issue like this before, but maybe?
