My clip suddenly gets gigantic when I stabilise it!
There, I’ve said it. This is most disconcerting. I click the little blue box in the Inspector window, and suddenly the clip gets huge! Sometimes it even gets inverted vertically. What the heck is going on here?

The video is being scaled up too much. It’s probably too unstable or has too much lateral motion that doesn’t make stabilization possible in FCP.

Respectfully, Tom, I don’t think that’s the case. I’m not talking about hugely choppy video by any means. Could it be anything else?

I’m using the same with no issues even vaguely similar, I’ve had mostly successes with it, when it hasn’t worked it hasn’t displayed anything like you are experiencing, although I have seen it as an issue on other forums. I haven’t seen any explanation other than a possible problem with Lion, which you aren’t using.
The only other suggestions I could offer is to try logging in as a different user, or re-install.

Post samples of before and after applying stabilizing.
So we know what is up.
I have had pretty good luck playing with it.

It’s definitely because of movement in the clip. I’ve had this happen with a lot of clips. The clip may appear to be not too shaky but I bet there’s somewhere in the clip where there is a quick lateral or vertical movement. Why FCP X can’t deal with those is beyond me. It would seem that any decent stabilization should be able to account for other movement.

This happened to me once before. I think what I finally did to fix it was re-import the clip. I also think that I chose to stabilize after it was imported rather than have FCPX analyze upon import. I can’t remember exactly but if you play around with those options it should fix the problem. There was no sudden lateral movement anywhere in the clip. I think it is just a bug.
