1440×1080 is a common hd resolution… it uses a pixel aspect ratio of 1.33 to get a 16×9 frame aspect ratio (much like dv 720×480 uses a .9 par to get a 4×3 ratio or widescreen sd 720×480 uses a 1.2 par to get a 16×9 ratio).

to fix this, you can simply hit the pixel aspect ratio correction button at the bottom of the preview window… it’s the one that looks like a rectangle with an arrow above it.

or, you can work in a square pixel comp (set the comp settings to 1920×1080, square pixel). ae will handle the pixel aspect ratio conversion from the sources par to the comp’s par, so you won’t need to scale anything.

Thank you very much, is that button just for a preview? meaning, if i worked in AE with it the pixel aspect ratio toggled to square would it export as it looks in the preview window?

yes… if you work in a 1440×1080 comp with a 1.33 par, then it will render as 1440×1080 with a 1.33 par.

if your next step is to take that footage into a piece of software that works with typical video standards (like an nle) then it should be fine with that file (as it would have been if you took the raw file into the nle).

if your next step is uploading to the web, a web player may not recognize the file as having a non-square pixel and may display it squished.

so your workflow may depend on what the destination is, or more specifically, what the next step in your process is….
