Probably. Check your EX1 firmware. If it says anything earlier than v.1.11 it won’t recognize your Sandisc media.

Turn on the EX to Camera mode:

1. Press and hold the Menu and the SEL/SET buttons at the same time.
2. While those are pressed push the cancel button.
3. The Maintenance menu will come up. Scroll down to IF at the bottom. There you’ll see the camera’s serial number and the firmware version.

If the firmware is earlier than v.1.11 you’ll have to take it back to Sony and get them to do an update.

Thanks for your help. Sadly, my 3 week old camera has 1.05_405 firmware. I live on the Big Island of Hawaii and the dealer is on Oahu.

Luck of the draw I guess. Your EX1 must be N.O.S. (new old stock). You could try returning it to where you bought it if the dealer is local and ask for another EX1 that has the new firmware. Now that you know how to check the camera’s firmware, etc…this way you wouldn’t have to wait while the dealer sends your camera in to Sony for the update.

They seem to be a first-rate bunch. Too bad my new camera is not so new.

I agree with Don. They should give you a camera with current 1.11 firmware. Otherwise they should do the firmware upgrade for free (usually $100) but that might entail sending it to Sony. You might also want to check the batter drain issue (battery drains quickly when camera is off and battery left in). Also the backplate letter wear off over time in older models so they’d replace that too.

Basically the firmware history seems to be
1.02
1.03
1.05
1.11 (only version that works with MxR)

The plot thickens. I bought the camera while on a shoot on the road. I made the decision to leave the box behind rather than ship it back home. I didn’t feel good about that decision even then. Now this happens. The dealer is a good sort, though, so I don’t anticipate a problem, other than the hassle of going through the firmware upgrade problem.

I know this probably won’t help you now but it may help others. My ex-1 was near the one year mark and I called Sony about the firm ware update and they were most helpful. I sent it in (NJ) and they performed the update for free. Otherwise it would have cost $100.

They also replaced the back plate where the writng had worn off for no charge. Camera worked like a champ and was finally traded for the EX-3. I must say that the folks at Sony (NJ) were most helpful and understanding. I was at the end of my racing season and still needed he camera. I contacted them and they sent me a message stating the problem (firmware upgrade) with a date that would insure the upgrade without cost.

I know its late but i just had the same problem. You need to format the cards in the camera first. That will work
