Are there other ways to get files off a p2 card with out having a camera? Also I was looking into mxf4mac…is this only useful if i actually have the p2 card and camera? I know it sounds like a silly question but my company is looking into getting this software but we usually go to a studio to do all of our shotting and then they usually give us the footage via hard drive.

[christina rule] “.is this only useful if i actually have the p2 card and camera?”

No. It is more useful if you have the footage transferred from your p2 cards in the native p2 directory structure. If you look at my tutorial, I walk through the process of getting your fotoage to FCP, but the footage has already been transferred off of the P2 cards by that point. If you get footage on a hard drive that is a bunch of p2 CONTENTS folders, mxf4mac will really speed up your workflow as you won’t have to log and transfer. You can watch the tutorial here and write back with questions:

MXF4Mac is software that allows you to get the footage from the card, or card dump folders, into FCP. You need an actual PHYSICAL way to get the card connected to the computer, right? For that you need a laptop with PCMCIA slot, or a laptop with Express34 slot and the Duel Systems adapter. Or a P2 Gear, or P2 Mobile (both made by Panasonic).

jeremy I did watch your tutorial! Very good! I was just confused about the fact if i needed the actually p2 or i could just request the native p2 directory. HOw would I tell them to go about doing that?
Since they usually do it through fcp i believe.

If you decide to purchasde MXf4mac, there’s no reason to get the quicktime files and use FCP. they can simply copy the data off of the cards in their natural p2 structure and you will send that information to FCP using the software.

    Make sense?

Oh yes that makes sense i was asking how I would tell them to seend me the footage in the native p2 because right now all they know how to do is to transfer through final cut.

Always get the original files when you can help it. The more people with copies the better too. Redundant backup.

    What Shane says and,

All they need to do is copy the cards. I use Shotput from Imagine Products to automate this process.
