It’s the archiving of P2 files that makes me nervous about possible loss. OTH, it’s comforting to see that the Library of Congress is now tranferring video tapes to MXF format for their archives.

P2 Logger from Imagine looks like something you really need to keep the MXF archive in order. Is the basic version sufficient for most uses, or do people recommend one of the Bronze, Silver, etc?

Based on forum comments, I’m inclined to use the following workflow:

    1. P2 Logger (basic)
    2. archive edited MXF files onto two hard drives. (LaCie 500’s is what I’ve been using, and it’s worked very well for all DV; now I’ll be shooting DV50 and wonder about whether they’ll still work.) It may seem over-kill, but the two drives gives me a safety backup and a drive at project’s end to give to the client…something we’ve always done with field tapes. Is there a way to keep these two drives in sync so I’m not having to always wonder whether I’ve got matching archives (CarbonCopy Cloner, for instance)?
    3. Export from P2 to XML files for import into FCP.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Thats what we do with the added step of archiving 4 gig cards to a DVD-R,
a client also shot with 8 gig cards the other day…
Not sure what to do with those, dual-layer DVD I guess….
I thing I noticed using P2 log…on the MAC if you add any
logging info and save it that same P2 CONTENTS cannot be read
on a PC using the Panasonic P2 viewer….
We edit with MAC and the client is only PC so we
dumped all P2 cards for them to a Seagate 500 gig drive
and he can view and make notes for us using his PC…
What is needed is cross compatability of P2 log and the
    P2 viewer…

I just dump every card into its own folder on a drive. Then clone that drive and use it as my capture source in FCP. That way I have 3 copies of every clip:

The original drive I copied each P2 to.

The clone that I then capture into FCP from. (The first two contain the original MXF files.)

Then the import to P2 in FCP gives me the third copy, now as a QuickTime wherever I set my log and capture bin.
