    Hi All,

    I am commencing a project where we have to choose between MXF OP1A mpg 2 @ 35MPS or Prores 422 HQ which seems to be about 180+ MPS. I am expecting the need to blow it up and composite some very old footage: should I push for Prores or accept the economists push for the cheaper MXF? My choice would be prores but maybe I am overlooking (am not so familiar with) MXF OP1A.

    What’s the original footage’s format / codec?

    There is also XDCam 50 which is 4:2:2. It really comes down to a couple of factors:

    1 – drive space (prores will be significantly more). If that’s a problem, go with MXF OP1a
    2 – type of editing. Both codecs are good and you can ‘blow up’ XDCam reasonably well like ProRes though I’d give the quality advantage to ProRes (though I’ve not done any true testing) If you’re going to zoom in a lot (say 250% plus) I’d probably use ProRes.
    3 – speed of scrubbing vs. your system. If you have a newer system with lots of RAM and so forth, then go back to items #1,2. If you have a old system with mediocre ram, etc. then ProRes may provide a smoother editing experience.

    With that codec of OP1A Pro Res HQ would definitely look far better in the end. If they took DNxHD OP1A then that would be an equal option to Pro Res HQ though DNxHD as far as quality.

    Thanks for the response.

    The original is old film – circa 1914. We have the opportunity to get it done the way we like but there are competing points of view.
