    Hello

I need a quick and professional answer to a simple question.
How to open MXF files to Premiere CS3.

What i’ve got is a movie recorded on Sony XDCAM (model PDR530p).
I’ve been able to capture the footage using Firewire and a Video Disc Reader (Sony XDCAM PDW-V1).

But i see that i can access files recorded on the disc by using FTP Protocol and connectiog to PDW-V1. The files have MXF extention. I know that they are some kind of MPEG2 files, but theres no way to import it into Premiere CS3.

I tried CineForm AspectHD, Raylight and stuff, but i just can’t seem to get it working.

I will also be happy if someone could show me a way to batch convert MXF files into MPG’s or even uncompressed AVI’s. Whatever… I just want to have those files as they were recorded bu the camera (each shot is a different file).

    Please advice.
    Thanks

The old DVRAck which Adobe purchased was supposed to convert MXF to PremierePro readable files. CHekc the Adobe Ultra docs if you have it.

    Then there’s this –

    Good Luck

unfortunately i didn’t find anything useful for me on that site you posted, but it sure is worth bookmarking, so thanks a lot!

the only thing that looked interesting was freeMXF.org site, but it seems that the software available on that site is for converting MPG to MXF, not the other way around.

DVRack = Ultra? didn’t you mean DVRack = OnLocation ?

    correction.

    i’ve downloaded MXF Desktop: https://www.snellwilcox.com/features/mxf/

i still cannont import MXF files into Premiere, but i was able to
import it via AVS (Avisynth script) and AVS Premiere plugin.
this works, but i’m afraid that this might not be as stable as it should be. and the sound is distorted (good thing i’m not interested in sound in this case)

MXF Desktop comes with unwarper, but it seperates mxf to m2v and wav witch is not what i want. and the worse thing is that i have to upwarp each file one by one – no batch unwarping/conversion.

    anyone has any other ideas?
    thanks

    Hi Jerzy

Perhaps a visit and/or note to Sony and Panasonic may help. MXF is essentially an MPEG-2 wrapper, AFAIK. Kinda strange that thqa aforementioned companies do not provide for a freely available transcoder seeing and knowing that MPEG-2 encoded files, especially, at HD rez are a nuisance to work with natively.

I would look at Vegas, for now, to see if they have a solution. Download a working/timeout version and perform your transcodes there if possible.

This is of course total BS coming from the acquisition stage and leaving folks high and dry as to having a viable way to work with it. And yes, It’s On Location that I was referring to. Sorry for the “lost in translation” bit on my part.

And give Adobe a shout too.

Once in a while I notice a few less than capable, sitting on an ivory tower, albeit pushing boxes and not much else, yet getting in the way of pure production bliss.

The COW’s Ron Lindeboom and/or Tim Wilson should have a pretty good idea too.

    Hi All,
Just to chime in… MXF is not a MPEG wrapper. Most
of the talk these days is the MXF files from a Panasonic
camera. I am sure other cameras use this format, but on
the Panasonic, MXF is a DVCPro 25, 50, or HD file. Premiere
Pro does not support the MXF file, but Raylight and AspectHD
from Cineform are useful products for this. Raylight allows
the dragging and dropping of MXF files into Premiere Pro
where as AspectHD converts the MXF file to a Cineform
AVI. Part of the AspecctHD software is HDLink and the
MXF files must go through this before using in PPro. However,
Once the conversion is done, any program that can use
AVI files can use the CineForm AVIs.

    Hope this helps.

Like i said before, i tried AspectHD and Raylight, and both are far from batch converting and dragging into PPro.

After two days of experimenting i’ve found that if i change the name on my file to be AVI it seems to import into premiere, but without sound, and it causes it to throw some strange out of memory errors – and that doesnt happen to me at all even with huge projects.

the fact that i can import mxf with a changed name may be a result of installing some codecs and other clever software, but now since i no longer know what the hell is in my system its hard to tell.

Thanks for the clarification Mark. Jerzy, did you try the Vegas route? Changing the extension is one way cos the MXF is essentialyl a container. But in this case, it’s more than a simple wrapper cos there will be crucial metadata that’s embedded into the MXF.

Again, it would be interesting to hear your exploits with a trial version of Vegas.

    Cheers
