MXF Files Offline and File Cant Import
Okay so I jut got Media Composer 3.1.1 for my Mac. So I received a Bin file and MXF files for that Bin from the post house. When I open the Bin all the media is offline. Then when I try to Re-link the media it cannot relink to the media. Then I tried the Media Tool no help. So I try to just import the media one time at a time but when I open the file I get an error message from Avid Saying “You Cannot import this file into a bin. See the documentation for information about transferring media files”. Please help. I have been trying for hours to gets this Avid set up and I have a feeling it is a quick fix I cannot find.

You need not and cannot import the MXF files into the bin.
What you need is to place the MXF mediafiles you received from the post house on the right place. That is, on any drive (preferable not your boot drive), the media should be placed so that their path is:
DRIVE/Avid MediaFiles/MXF/1/1234abcdef.mxf
Within the ‘MXF’ folder, there can be multiple folders, not just ‘1’, also ‘2’ ‘3’ etc.If the media is anywhere else, MC won’t see it.
You should not need to relink, it will find the links when you launch.

Thank you. That actually makes sense. Once I did that I saw my avid scanning the drive (Not the Boot Drive) and the Avid MediaFiles folder. I also moved the .avb file in the same folder as the media just to be safe. But once I opened the Bin all the media was still offline. I know I should not have to re-link the media so could it be that Avid is just looking in the wrong place again? How do I make Avid look in the right place for media if thats the case? Am I over look something? Im still a little new to Avid Im a Final Cut guy.

Do not move the .avb bin into that folder. Just don’t do it. It should not be there, so you should keep it out of there.
The first thing I would do is to open the Media Tool (under Tools), and have it display master clips for all projects on all drives.
That way, you should be able to confirm that the media you are looking for is actually there, and actually visible to the Avid.Then, if it is, open the bin that should contain the footage you want to use. If the clips still appear offline, select all and choose Clip->Relink, and uncheck the box to only relink to footage for the current project.

Thank you. Once I did the search for master clips the dailies showed up and there it all was. Thankx for the help. I dont know how the media was offline and why that worked but its always some small glitch that can give you the worst of times. Thank you again for your time.
