MXF container needs to be created from FCP file
Posted by Ryan Mackfall on July 29, 2010 at 12:11 amok guys here’s the long and short
video shot on canon XHA1 @ 1080i 25fps (HD)
needs to be turned into an MXF container with a quicktime processed XDCAM HD 4:2:2 file at 50mbps
Audio is 8 channels which have been set up accordingly in discrete channels -9db limited.
Can you please give us a hand to sort this mess out. Thanks.

July 29, 2010 at 3:32 amMy choice would be MXF4Mac (a simple export) but then I already own that…

July 29, 2010 at 7:51 amYea I’ve looked at that. Will it take the 8 audio tracks I’ve put in, and put them in as MXF audio? And will it convert to XDCAM HD. I’m considering buying it but I want convincing that is the answer first.
The original footage and audio isn’t MXF or XDCAM HD data you see so its worried me.

July 29, 2010 at 9:21 amMy choice is to use the FREE sony exporter.
Just export to XDcam (you can point a directory on a drive as output) and you end up with nice MXF files, compatible with our national broadcaster.Bouke

July 29, 2010 at 9:23 amYea I’ve got that Bouke
Only problem is these guys want 8 audio channels and the exporter says you can only have 2 or 4?! So it’s not allowing me to export the file.
Argh. If I’m doing the audio export process wrong then please correct me. This is a new ballpark for me.
Audio channels needed are:
Ch 1+2 = Full mix
Ch 3+4 = international sound (this is raw sound, sound that cannot be taken away from the picture, sound that’s been recorded directly to the camera)
ch 5+6 = music and effects
Ch7+ 8 = V/O -

July 29, 2010 at 3:33 pmCheck your sequence settings.
Set it to 8 discrete channels @ 24 bit.
Set them all to mono, NOT to the -3 default but to 0.
(run a few shorts tests that you can import back using the XDcam transfer tool)hth,

July 29, 2010 at 4:11 pmI’ve actually worked around this myself and the answer is easy!
Easy setup a new sequence that is XDCAM HD 50i.
Export from the original edit a self contained HD file, then drag that into the XDCAM HD 50i setup with the main 2 audio tracks that have everything on it. You then are free to add the other channels below! Channels in the XDCAM sequence should be dual mono and then down mix as db as your client as specified. Also be aware of how they want their audio tracks to be grouped, that setting is located on the first tap of the sequence settings.
Once your file is all set up and ready in the XD CAM sequence, export via Sony’s XD CAM export software which is free on their site. You are left with a love MXF file!
12 hours of stress may have paid off. We shall see! Thanks for the help guys!

August 4, 2010 at 4:19 pmI found this thread because I face a similar situation. Where exactly do you find “Sony’s XD CAM export software which is free on their site”?
I have searched and I am unsure which product it is.
Also, is DVCPRO HD codec same as DVCPRO HD 100? Client will accept QT wrapped DVCPRO HD 100, but when I choose DVCPRO HD in compressor I get a resolution of 1280×1080 with an pixel aspect of .667, lower than HDV standard. Can I just set it to 1920×1080 with square for the result I need? I just need to get them a sharp product, and they specify all files must be 1920×1080.
Also, and this is a bit confusing…They will accept:
“MPEG2 >35mbits 1080 60i (59.94i)”…export in compressor is listed as Mbps…which is proper abbreviation for Megabits per sec…small “m” means literally milli-bits, can I assume, as usual, that most people are just uninformed and they want Mbps?
Thanks for any help.

August 4, 2010 at 4:48 pmWhat you need mate is the sony XD CAM EXPORTER free software, search on google.
Export your self contained file in the format you shot it in, then ‘easy set up’ a new sequence set to XD CAM (and the required settings). THEN DO FILE > NEW SEQUENCE.
Drag in the exported self contained file. It will ask ‘DO YOU WISH TO CHANGE THE SEQUENCE TO MATCH THE CLIP SETTINGS?’
Click NO!
Then go file>export>sony xd cam
Put your settings as you want them. BAM. Job’s a goodun. Just had my client confirm the files I sent were fine. So its golden!

August 4, 2010 at 5:43 pmI totally get how to do it…but I still cannot find this elusive XDCAM Exporter anywhere. My googles all come up with flip4mac purchase stuff, and Sony site does not seem to have it available, or at least easily findable.
Anybody have any suggestions?
Or info on my other questions about DVCPRO HD…when I tried to set the resolution and aspect manually it still output a file at 1280×1080…odd, since compressor says 1920.
Any help with the other questions or info on where exactly to find the XDCAM exporter is greatly appreciated.
Note…I can export XDCAM in FCP or Compressor, as a .mov, will this be a wrapped .mxf and I just can’t see that fact?
Many thanks,
Rich
