Hello, all! Because our shiny new 64-bit computer with 64-bit Sony Vegas won’t let me use Boris FX or Graffiti inside Vegas I am forced to render out my Boris text on my old, sad laptop. Do MXF files embed alpha channels or am I stuck with avi’s? It’s just that the rendered files are SO LARGE (1 gig for 10 seconds of effect) while the mxf files are usually only around 10Mb.

Do I need to just suck it up, or is there another way?

    Thanks for your help!

I worked around it by taking mxf files and chroma keying out the black background, but it seems….inelegant.

If you want to render with alpha channels use the Quicktime Animation codec.

Thanks! I’m still pretty weak on codecs (I get the feeling that even after learning them for 10 years the subject is still confusing for many people).

Could you perhaps point me in the direction of menu choices in my render dialogue? I read somewhere that the quicktime animation codec doesn’t ship with Vegas 8 (I am using Vegas Pro 9, is it still this way?). Is it freely available for download, or does it cost? Do I use the .mov container?

[Heather Walters] “Could you perhaps point me in the direction of menu choices in my render dialogue?”

Sure. Select File | Render As… to bring up the Render As window. Then select Quicktime 7 and Default Template (Uncompressed) and press the Custom… button to make a new template like this:

In the Custom Settings window select Animation as the Video format, give the template a meaningful name save press the Save button to save it like this:

Finally, press OK and you now have a Quicktime Animation template that will render 32-bit with an alpha channel.
