mxf 50fps problems
Hi,
I have MXF files from a P2 card that have all been shot 50fps. Normally 25fps MXF files in final cut pro have been fine to edit but I cant get FCP to play the 50fps in 25fps ie slow motion.
I can get them to play fast in a 25fps sequence and I even made an XML sequence to play at 50fps and then exported at 25 but this still played fast.The solution i have been using to this is to take the files into after effects and interpret them as 25fps then export them out as QTs, then they play 50 at 25 but it takes ages and needs heavy rendering in fcp.

Did you log and transfer this footage or are you editing native MXF?

You can’t just take a 50fps format, drop it into a 25fps sequence and magically make it play in slow motion. No, it will drop every other frame to ensure that it plays at the proper speed. You need to CONVERT the clip.
One way is with the DVCPRO HD Frame Rate Converter (FRC). But I am not sure if the FRC has PAL support yet, but try it. It is in the TOOLS menu. Select the clip you want to convert, then go to the FRC.
The other method is with Cinema Tools CONFORM. Duplicate the clip (as this is permanent and modifies the master clip), the open Cinema Tools (have it open existing data base, but then click CANCEL). Then OPEN the clip, and hit the CONFORM button. Then tell it was frame rate you want. This will take all 50fps and convert them to individual 25fps…thus making a 50% slow motion file.

But don’t do this on native MXF files, please write back with how exactly you have the footage and whether or not you are editing natively.

Well, you CAN’T do this with MXF files…this only works with QT files I believe.
