    Hi Guys,

I edit promos and shit for TV. They want me to switch to FCP for some of it. We’ve been capturing from DigiBeta into Avid MC at MFX 2:1. What would be an equivalent format to capture in FCP.

Output is SD PAL onto DigiBeta tapes. Broadcast on Australian TV.

    Cheers,

    Grant

Uncompressed 10-bit. Or you can try the ProRes HQ for SD…that’s similar to the DNx codecs.

For SD, I’d just use ProRes, not even HQ. 10 bit Uncompressed will create huge files.

Thanks guys. I’ll go with plain old ProRes. I understood that DigiBeta could only handle 8-bit anyhow. Is this the case?

Not sure what youmean that it can’t “handle” 10-bit. It’s just a video signal. A cleaner one than 8-bit. BetaSP is typically 8-bit.

Digibeta is 10b compressed so from the SDI you will get 10b uncompressed.
Prores is your best option (unless you can manage 10b Unc).
If you record from any analog source (Component or Composite), 10b capturing will yields the best picture quality whatever the original source (VHS or HDCAM).
