  • Muting layers conditionally on other layers

Hello. I wonder if someone can help me. I have Sony Vegas Pro 13.0, Vegasaur and Timeline Tools.

I’m trying to find a method to mute layers conditionally on another layer underneath.

For example, suppose I’m making a Let’s Play video where the gameplay switches between a blue menu screen and the normal action screen. What I want is to insert some additional text, but only when the blue menu screen appears.

For this, I need some way to automatically detect when the blue menu screen appears and then use the positions of these detections to un-mute the text layer that I want to display. You might describe this as an image version of audio ducking, or sidechain compression; where one image’s visibility is influenced by the nature of another image.

I know I could do all of this by hand, but I’d much rather find a way to automate the process.

One Idea I’ve already investigated is using the Optical Scene Detect feature from Timeline Tools; I can successfully create regions around the scenes that correspond with the blue menu screen (though regions around the other parts are also created). I can’t figure out, though, how I could use this region information to automatically mute/un-mute the above text layer.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I wonder if this is even possible. It seems too simple not to be. Thank you. 🙂
