    I am wits ends.

PPro works like a charm the first time I use it after rebooting. If I leave PPro and than return, the video and audio stutters. If I turn either the video or the audio off, the other works fine. If I then reboot my machine, PPro works fine again.

    I am running a 3G Hz P4 with 1.5G ram and 1000G disk space over 3 drives (1 ATA, 2 SATA).

I am assuming that PPro is doing something ugly, but I can’t figure out what. I have deleted all unused applications. I have killed as many tasks as possible. I have searched the Adobe Forums and the Creative Cow forums.

My last hope is that somebody here has seen this problem before. If not, I will be forced to reinstall the operating system and all my applications again.

    Skye-

Is this Pro 1.5 or 2.0? How big is your page file? Are you connected to a SAN or other shared storage? All jobs or just one and if just one is it big, does it have a lot of stills, anything unusual about it? Answering these questions will help get enough info for someone to take a crack at your problem.

Two things off the top of my head:

    – check/update your graphic card’s display drivers to the latest available. (Also, you can try messing with Premiere’s playback settings – there are 3 modes: hardware accelerated, normal (regular D3D), and GDI. Try each out, see if it has an impact on the problem)

    – same idea, but for your audio drivers. Are you using the default audio settings, or did you try using a custom ASIO driver for some specific sound card?

The problem is with PPro 1.5.

Not sure how big the page file is. Will have to check tonight.

I am connected to a LAN. I do have some shared drives, but these are not needed for this (or any project).

The reboot problem effects very simple as well as complex projects. The simple project is a 5 minute NTSC DV AVI file captured via PPro. The AVI plays fine in media player.

The only unusual aspect of my computer is an Edirol UA-25 USB audio sound device. The UA-25 allows for audio input of two microphones that need phantom power as well as audio out. I had been using the Edirol for its better sound quality having selected it as the audio hardware in the preferences. I have since reverted to my onboard audio card and removed the Edirol device driver from my computer. I suppose it could have left a few surprises behind.

As for the video card is a Radeon 2900 with device drivers that are the latest and greatest.

The ATI device drivers are up to date. I did try to switch to GDI only without luck.

As mentioned in another post in this same thread, I did have an Edirol UA-25 sound device connect for a while. The time frame is ABOUT that of when the problem started up. I will go back and make sure the driver came out clean.

    Skye-

If it’s 1.5 you may have run into the infamous memory leak problem (which USUALLY just shuts you down but . . .) anyway, try this – open your task manager and keep track of the amount of memory being used both by Premiere and by its temp file. I usually get sludginess when it passes a gig, then it usually fails at about 2 gigs (although I have had it climb as hih as 3.5 gigs and managed to get out in one piece). I have been told that this problem is more or less taken care of in 2.0 so that MIGHT offer some relief.

Unfortunately, if you are having problems because of this my only advice is to save often and to reboot after opening 2 projects (or opening a project twice in one session) that, at least6, saves loss of time and effort. If your page file (under virtul memory in system settings) is less than 2Gb you might want to increase its size, be aware, however, that I had more problems if I moved the page file off of the system drive.

Have you tried disconnecting the LAN completely?

After many long hours of trial error (including a full OS reinstall on a virgin harddrive) I found the error to be in the SATA BIOS support. I updated the BIOS on my ASUS P4C800-DLX card to the latest version (including SATA issues) and no more stutter.

I sure hope this helps someone!

Thanks for the help folks… The COW rules!
