I have a brand new 8 core Mac Pro w/ 12 G RAM, ATI Radeon HD 4870 512MB. The project is in SD using some DVCPro HD footage as well as simple Motion generators and a few Illustrator files. Working with the large project in Motion 4, I’m CONSTANTLY having to clear the RAM preview so the screen will refresh. Activity monitor says I have about 7.5 G RAM unused. I’m getting a lot of Motion crashes as well. In consultation with a Motion support guy at Apple, I’ve tried running with just one screen (I have two 24″ Dells) as well as disconnecting anything Firewire from the machine (firewire drives were getting randomly “disconnected/dropped” as well). I’ve disconnected my DAC-2 firewire to component/S-video NTSC monitoring output as well just to see if that might be a factor. These experiments have had no effect.

My working method is like this – make a change in the project, save, clear RAM preview, repeat. It’s not supposed to be like this. BTW, what RAM gets cleared, the video card or the CPU? Presumably the CPU RAM? Would an additional ATI HD 4870 card help if it’s a video card RAM issue? (provided I could find some way to power it – no extra internal power hook-ups appear to be available)

I’m a bit frustrated. Any ideas? Thanks in advance.
