Does anybody know of a web site where I can purchase uncompressed WAVE files of everyday music? I realize that probably nothing is going to have as wide of a selection as iTunes does, but I’m looking for somewhere where I can download uncompressed files.
Which leads me to this question…..how big of a deal is it to use iTunes’ mp3 format in a video project (licensing and copyright aside)…..is that compression really even noticeable? Is it worth finding WAVE files, or should I just use iTunes’ stuff?
    Thanks in advance.

Whether its noticable or not depends on the track, the quality of the encoding, and the way its mixed with the other sound in your project.

If it’s “full frontal” in the mix, I would definitely get the CD and rip it (provided you have permission) to WAVE or AIFF. I don’t know of any service doing downloads of uncompressed music….the record companies (until EMI just the other day) have insisted on music downloads having DRM (anti-piracy), which is currently only available with Apple iTunes AAC encoding and WMV.

If you use compressed audio, you should use iTunes, Quicktime Player or Compressor to convert it to AIFF 48K Stereo for use in FCP.

Thanks for the tips…….I’ve tried now to convert the m4p files from iTunes to aiff files both in quicktime and in compressor and I can’t get either of them to work…..I’m assuming this is due to the DRM….any tips on how to get around this?

And by the way, since this is a student project, I’m lawfully allowed to use this copyrighted material and I don’t plan on infringing copyrights anytime soon. Should the project make any kind of profit, I will contact and record labels that I’ve used and either negotiate a deal or just change the music to royalty-free stuff.
