Multiple Transitions?
Posted by Andrew Rice on April 27, 2005 at 7:24 pmHi,
First off., I am aware of how to add multiple transitions to sequential clips, what I am wondering if there is a way to paste a trasition to multiple clips that are stacked in V1, V2, V3, etc. For instance say I have a 5 clips that end at the same point in the time line…and I want to add a centered cross disolve to all the clips. In the past I have copy/pasted via selecting the desired transition and option/mouse drag to the new clip, but this only lets me past to one clip at a time…can I past to multiple clips? Thanks,

I can’t answer your question, but perhaps you can answer mine…
HOW DO YOU add a transition to multiple sequential clips? I often make shows thare basically slide shows. I line them up and want to add a dissolve to all of them at once. Other than option-dragging a dissolve one-by-one, I don’t know how to do it to say 30 at a time. I’d love to. What do you do?

April 28, 2005 at 3:27 amHi Todd,
First it helps to have your clips numbered sequentially, so they are in order in the Browser window. Then simply select all of them and drag them into the Right side of the Canvas window and drop them into the “Insert with Transition” drop area. All the clips are automatically put into the timeline, starting at the point where your playhead is, with your default transition.
To set the default transition, right click (if you have a two button mouse), or option/click the desired transition in the Effects tab of the Browser window and select “set default transition”
If your clips aren’t in order in the browser window, again right click in the window and select “view as large icons”, or whatever size is good for your monitor, and still allows you to identify the clip, and rename them with numbers. For instance 001,002,003…etc. Once that is done, change the view choice to “view as list”, and they are all in order!! Cool.
Hope this helps.

Thanks forf the tip. Is there any way that you know of adding in multiple transitions once the clips are already on a timeline? I have added the same filter to all of them, but cannot seem to find anyway (like a “select all”) to do so. I would ideally like to lay in a bunch of clips(actually still photos), put a cross-dissolve on them all, and then tweak their location and timing to the music.
Probably can’t be done, but thought I’d see.
Thanks again.

in the timeline, put your playhead at the begining of the range of clips you want to add transitions to.
select the range.
drag the range from the timeline to the canvas, drop in the “Overwrite with transition” window.Andrew:
select all your edit points,
Apple T to add the default transitionyou can use the group tool (G for Group) to lasso a bunch of edits.
the trim window opens (wish it didnt) but just go back to the timeline, and it closes.cheers,

May 2, 2005 at 2:34 amThanks Nick…That will help. One other question…when I am pasting multiple transitions into the end of a few stacked clips, with your cool technique, is there a way to make them “centered on edit” without doing them all one at a time?

May 2, 2005 at 9:22 amyeah, i see what you mean..
i select all the transistions, and Option 2 to center, but it only happens to the one on V1.how about you lasso them all with the group tool, and add half the duration of the trans?
that’ll have the same effect, i thinkanother aproach which would be good if you have more to create, though:
center ONE trans, double click to open in the viewer,
(or double click a trans from the effects browser, and center it)
then drag to the favourites bin in the effects tab of the browser.
control click on that trans, and chose “Make default”now ANY trans you add will be centered on the cut.
cheers,

Wow…I have been wanting to do that for a long time! That will save a lot of time for me….I can’t believe how excited I get over stuff like this, my wife is right….I really must be a computer geek.
Thanks
