please pardon my question, which i’m sure seems rather basic, but i’m new to working w/ multiple external drives, etc., so pls bear w/ me.

basically, i’ve been working off one master drive for a long-term project, so the scratch disk for that project is set to that drive (drive #1).

recently, i got another drive for a completely separate project, so i set a new scratch disk for that project to that drive (drive #2).

both scratch disks appear in “system settings” like they ought to, but final cut won’t open unless both drives are connected to the mac, so i have to daisy chain them – even tho i only want to access drive #2.

the pop-up i’m getting says “non-writable scratch disk” & tells me that drive #1 is missing. when i connect drive #1 by daisy chain, everything works fine, but it doesn’t seem like i should have to do this and it’s taking up a firewire port i need to connect a dv deck to.

shouldn’t i just be able to choose which scratch disk i want by checking off the appropriate boxes, but still have the other one listed under “system settings” for when i switch projects/drives?

when i only want to work with drive #2, should i – or can i – “clear” the scratch disk for drive #1? does “clearing” a scratch disk in “system settings just clear it from the list? or does it ACTUALLY CLEAR the contents of the scratch folder?

is the solution just to manually re-set the scratch disks when switching btwn drives? if so, that seems counter-intuitive since final cut allows you to have many scratch disks listed.

am i missing something super basic here? thanks for your patience.

You do indeed have to set one or the other to be a scratch disk. The list you see in the System settings is used only when you want the system to automatically move to the next disk when the first in the list is full and you’re capturing from tape or ingesting a lot through log and transfer and want to have the system manage where the files are moved to the next drive… so either have them both up all the time, or set manually each time you launch. sorry, but this is the way it is…
