    Hey all,

I’m creating a music video with Sony Vegas 9.0 right now. I’ve used this program for around a year to make music videos, and I’m actually pretty experienced. But I always run into the same problems, and with this project I’m on right now, I’m getting problems I get quite frequently and new problems.

First of all, here’s some information. I’m not sure what all you need to know to help me, so please let me know what else you need.
    1. Sony Vegas 9.0
    2. All clips were filmed with a Sanyo Xacti CG10 HD. I’ve always used this camera with Vegas without the problems I’m getting.
    3. My clips are all MPEG-4 Movie file type.
    4. I’ve been actually editing the video since around early August, and I edit it as we get more clips filmed. We haven’t filmed since August, and then I had a project on Vegas for the video that had around 40 seconds or so done (scattered around the project, not just straight on 40 seconds.)

So my problems begin here. We finished filming two days ago and I began editing that night. I got around 20 or less clips into the project. Then when I clicked the ‘Import Media Button’, the folder popped up as usual, but all of my video files just showed the name, when it usually shows the Quicktime icon as well. I clicked on one of the videos to see its information, and at the bottom of the screen showing you files, it said the file type was unknown. I tried to add it to my project, and a screen popped up saying something like “There was an error opening one or more of the files.” But I can open the file and view it when I’m not on Vegas. The file is the same type as all of the other clips in my project, and it should be working, it’s not an unsupported file format. And that isn’t just with one file, that’s with every file now that I’ve began adding more to the project. But occasionally, Vegas will let me import a few of the files although it says ‘Unknown file type’.

Another problem, whenever I open up the project, the screen that says “An error occurred opening the media file. What would you like to do?” with three options pops up. It gives me the same three files every time, and each time I choose ‘specify a replacement file’ and I choose the same file, the screen saying “An exception has occurred.” pops up and Vegas closes. But the files are in fact working, I can watch them from my computer. They haven’t been moved.

Now when I’m working on this project Vegas crashes due to those problems constantly, and every now and then it just closes own without a message. Sometimes random files appear red in the timeline, and sometimes windows will launch a screen saying “Sony Vegas has stopped working.”

I am DESPERATE to finish this video, I’ve been trying to make it work for two days without success. Any help would be appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Baylee

WOW, I haven’t seen problems like that since 9.0a

Vegas has some bad mojo sometimes….

    Suggestions:

    1: Reinstall Vegas 9e.
    2: Reinstall Quicktime.
3: Put all your media in one directory.
4: when putting files onto the time line, just drag the file onto the timeline, it will auto import.
5: verify that Vegas is building its proxy files.

*If all else fails, download cineform and transcode all your footage to the visually lossless codec and edit
the new files, they are larger, yet your timeline will move faster and your FX and filters especially x-fades will work far better…

I usually reinstall my entire operating system every 6 months to a year, just to get back to a clean environment, fresh codecs etc…sometimes the internet gives you bogus files that reek HAVOC on other programs like VEGAS.

Hey everybody! Back with a new question with this problem.
So i uninstalled Sony Vegas, then when trying to reinstall, realized I lost my serial number, sadly. But I contacted Sony and faxed them my reciept and they sent me a new serial number. I opened up Sony Vegas from where I had reinstalled, and a box popped up saying my trial had expired. My only two options were ‘Buy Now’ or ‘Close’. If I click buy now, it’s offering my a totally different version than what I have. I don’t know how to enter my new serial number. I’ve installed and reinstalled it a few times today with no luck. Any idea what’s going on? How do I enter my number?

Alright Davd, I reinstalled Sony Vegas, and I’m still having the same problems. It just hasn’t crashed yet, so that was fixed. I have two questions for you, though.

    1. What are proxy files and how do i see if Vegas is verifying them?
    2. How do I download cineform/where do I download it from?

    Cineform is at : https://www.cineform.com

Open up your file manager to the directory to the location of your media that you are droping onto the time line. when you drag a clip to the vegas timeline a file is created with the same name with a sfk file extension.

    media.avi = your vid.
media.avi.sfk = proxied file for vegas

I highly doubt thats your problem though, it was most likely your QT program, new versions don’t work as well as the older ones… search the forum, people discuss that elsewhere…

    good luck…
