Multiple in and out points on a single item on timeline
Posted by Nathan Quattrini on March 13, 2007 at 4:02 pmI want to make something blink. If i adjust the in and out points I can make it visible only when I want which is fast and easy. Question is, can you have more than one set of in and out points on a single use of an imported object? Or is the only way that way to make lots of duplicates and space them out? I know I could do it with lots of opacity key frames on the single item, but it seems in and out points would be faster and easier

March 13, 2007 at 4:15 pmi don’t know of a way to have multiple ins and outs for a single clip/layer/comp, but the easiest way may be to just use hold keys in the opacity. create 2 (0% and 100%), then you can duplicate those and paste them where you want them…
if it loops, you can pre-comp that layer with the opacity change (just one cycle). set the length of the new pre-comp to the length you want to loop. then go back to the original comp, enable time remapping for your pre-comp loop add the expression loopOut(“cycle”,0) and extend the pre-comp’s out to the length you need.

March 13, 2007 at 4:33 pmI have only used expressions once before…this would be a good chance to learn (though programming is hard for me). Could you give an example of how to write looping code? I`m going through the help and not finding it, thanks

March 13, 2007 at 4:44 pmyou can also just add the expression loopOut(“cycle”,0) to your opacity,
this loops out (meaning after the last set keyframe)
and it repeats in “cycle” mode
all keyframes (0, because a non zero number would loop only the last n keys) -

March 13, 2007 at 4:51 pmthat’s good to know…
i haven’t needed to loop just a single layer (or a single set of key frames), but its’s good to know it can be done so simply.

March 13, 2007 at 5:05 pmOk i`ve stuck with copying and pasting the keyframes (as there are 3 alternating layers that blink) and have dropped that composition into a new one. How can I just loop the new one?

March 13, 2007 at 5:21 pmif your blinking comp is the length of the loop that you want (ie. the you want to repeat every 2 sec, so that comp is 2 sec.), all you need to do is enable time remapping (select your blinking comp, then, layer menu>time>enable time remapping). option-click (mac) the stop watch icon and typethe expression: loopOut(“cycle”, 0)
you then need to set you out point for your blinking comp to the duration that you need.
