Multiple Editors, Sharing cuts
Hey there,
After reading couple of post and articles about sharing projects, I have not come to the one describing our specific issue.We are running a three edits bays workflow, two edits bays and one for the AE, the main format is XDCAM EX 1080P 23.98 with a mix of ProRes 422, all systems working on 10.5.8, FCP 6.0.6. Quicktime 7.6.4. This is for a feature length Doc, tons of archival and footage to work with.
Both editors working on the same cut, however, each one saves locally the FCP project file, both edit bays have an identical 6TB raid, named the same and identical file structure.
When it comes to share the cut via, XML of the sequence, or copy and paste of the sequence from one project to the other, we lose the ability to “Reveal Master Clip” with-thing the bins and this is a project with huge amount of footage and lots of bins.
So the ideal scenario is to be able to have a collaborative environment that both editor can share cuts without losing capabilities. Splitting the projects is not an option.

As long as the editors utilize master clips of the same content, duration, and name, throughout their cuts, all that should be required is to, upon opening the “other editors timeline”, Reconnect Media, clicking to search for the media solely on the present computer’s RAID.
If the media is truly mirrored on both RAIDs, and no mirror-breaking alterations or Media Management have bungled the clips’ unanimity, the reconnect just needs to be pointed to the “new” right place to find the media.

Yes, this will happen. I’d suggest you think of your entire storage pool as the project, and NOT just the current project you happen to have open. FCP doesn’t care where the media lives, it can find it anywhere on the system (or network).
Therefore, if you think of your media as SEPARATE from the project, you can organize your media into a much more sophisticated format that DOESN’T rely on a project. For example, we use the plain old Mac folder and file structure to organize our media into various logical folders: Music, GrFX, Interviews, B-ROll etc. Any one editor may have half a dozen projects open simultaneously. One for Music, another for B-roll, etc.
True, you will lose the relationship to the master clip, but you can always use “reveal in finder” to show you where the clip came from. This requires a little bit of preplanning and organization on your part, but the end results are definitely worth it. We’ve organized our entire SAN this way, and have been using this workflow on dozens of shows currently on the air.

Thanks for you suggestions,
So this is a mayor drawback for FCP, if we have a new editor coming in that dont know the media “reveal master” is a huge help in a big project like the one we have.So in our case there is now default solution that FCP is capable of sharing sequences within multiple editors without affecting the projects.
