  • Multiple Drives/Partitions on a Single Hard Drive

Posted by Alexander Lee on November 25, 2009 at 12:46 am

I was wondering whether it’s OK to edit a project using 2 partitioned drives that are mounted from a single hard drive. The reason I would want to do this is I started a project 6 years ago when 400GB hard drives were the largest available. My project grew over the years to span 3 drives for the main project and other drives to hold 10 bit and HD outputs. What I’d like to do, is put all the contents of 2 or 3 drives on a single drive and partition it, but wasn’t sure if while using FCP whether the drive would freak out trying to read it’s data. I’m editing on a laptop and having 3 external drives always ready can be a hassle. I’m not doing hardcore editing, but don’t want to regret making the move. Any info would be most appreciated!

    Thanks,
    Alexander

You want to partition so that you can keep the same file directory? I think that is a VERY smart idea. Partitioning would be fine for that.

    It will work fine

    Sorry to disagree with Shane.
Partitions, IMHO, makes no sense. Use a folder.
Partitions slow everything. Is like having two (or more) disks, but with just one write/read system.
You will have more directories to keep updated, more Permissions to keep fit, etc.

    Agree with Rafael.
Partitioning always should be avoided in my opinion too.Significantly slow things down, mainly if you work with them in the same project.(and you do)
    Folders are your friend.

Don’t listen to these naysayers Alex. Your gut instinct is correct. If you are looking to consolidate your projects media, currently spanned as you describe across 3 hard drives, onto a single physical drive whilst at the same time preserving the existing media paths then partitioning as you’ve described is the right way to go about it.

    SOMEONE is on my side…yaay!

I recently did this and had no issues. Had a project that existed on two 500GB drives, but copied them to one 1TB drive partitioned into 2…and it worked fine. DVCPRO HD project.

    Hi Shane,
Sure will work with partitions. In fact would be the only way to keep the original file/folders structure of the project.
But, sorry, I hate partitions (brings me back to the era of the 80MB HDs and 4MB RAM).
I would put everything in a folder, reconnect media (you have to do it only once), save, and forget that the medias one day was split in three or four different drives.
I know Andy will say again that I’m too radical:-)

This because I’ve been learning FC in the wild, and the learning curve took me to the top of a tree.

BTW, What we have to do is to try to meet in Bangkok and have some beers.
I’ll bring them fro here (The Beer Lao is much better than the Shingha or the Xan).

Glad I waited on this then. I was getting a lot of pressure to go with folders, but I trust Shane’s advice. Glad to hear there’s others who agree with us. The beauty of democracy 🙂 Thank you guys!
