I think I already know the answer to this but I thought I’d see if anyone could tell me any different…

When working with another composition viewer open, is there any way to get the parent composition viewer to update real time while working in the pre-comp?

    Thanks

Just to add to my previous question, can this be done as well for the layer viewer? Painting on a layer without being able to to see a real time update in the comp viewer is pretty lame in my opinion. Is there anyway around this? If not Adobe need to pull their finger out and sort it!

    Thanks

“Adobe need to pull their finger out and sort it?”

You sure know how to charm someone into answering your question.

There are some instructions for how to use the ETLAT (edit this, look at that) features of After Effects CS4 in the “Viewers” section of After Effects Help.

Thanks for the reply, but I’m afraid that it mention what I was getting at.

If I’m in a precomp and I’m moving a mask for example, I’d like to be able to see the result in the parent comp viewer real time, without having to lift off my tablet then wait for result to render in the parent comp viewer. This would make the whole business ETLAT of far more intuitive.

    Thanks

Ps My earlier remark was written with tongue firmly in cheek! 😉

I haven’t tried it with everything, but I do know that if you can get the resolution low enough, AE will actually be realtime in updating the master viewer from a precomp. every 20 pixels works for me.
