I just went out and bought an Alesis MultiMix8FireWire mixer, 2 condensor mics and a 4 channel headphone amplifier.

I want two people to do an audio commentary on my movie.

    Here is my problem.

The voice-over tool in Final Cut Pro HD is PERFECT, as it plays the movie audio thru the mixer and records the audio from Mic 1 perfectly. There lies the problem, since the voice-over tool is a “single channel” tool, how do i get the audio from Mic 2 (Channel 2) into my commentary. This audio commentary needs to be recored with both people interacting at the same time, in a single session.

Ive tried exporting my movie into SoundTrack Pro, but that doesn’t play the audio from it back through the mixer, only through the built-in audio or the DV deck. Even though the “Recording” tab asks me which source I want, and which Monitor, both set to MultiMix, but the audio doesn’t come thru the mixer.

Does anyone have any idea how I do a mutli-channel audio commentary? Thanks!

    Aiden,

You’re not going to be able to do it through the voiceover tool to separate channels, only as a mixed track. Do you actually need to record it to the timeline anyway? Why not play the film back on from DVD or VHS and record the commentaries through the mixer using Capture? Then later just add the audio to two channels on your timeline. Will that work?

Maybe I explained it a bit confusing.

I don’t mind if both audio sources are recorded together on a single channel, thats fine, its the fact that FCP doesn’t pic out the output from the mixer from any channel except the 1st one on the mixer. I would like to have the mixer send all 8 channels from the board, onto the single channel in FCP. Is that possible?

    Aiden,

I’m not familiar with that mixer personally, but having just looked at it on their website it certainly looks like a full featured mixer to me. I have to believe it can mix all of the input channels into the output, otherwise it wouldn’t be called a “mixer.” I think you better study the manual a bit more carefull and look into properly configuring the bus and properly panning the inputs.
