Multimedia Project – Rendering Questions (Photos and Videos – from a few different sources)
I recently compiled a bunch of videos and photos into a video with Sony Vegas 10 to make a recap of the past year for my wife and I. However, now that I have finished creating the project, I am very unsure as to which render settings I should use. I want to burn this compilation onto a DVD and I would like to have the best quality possible as I will be playing on my 46″ LCD HDTV. The problem is that I am pretty unfamiliar with this kind of stuff so any help will be appreciated.
So, I shot the video with my Canon Vixia HRF100 at 1920×1080-24p, as well as with my IPhone 3GS (not sure what the resolution for it is). I also have photos from my 3GS and my Nikon D3000 (JPEG-3872×2592). Can I render at a setting of 3872×2592 or higher? Or does it have to be much lower, since the resolution of the other media is less? Also from what I have read, it is best to render to MPEG-2 in order to burn to a DVD.
Anyways, any advice on the render settings will be really helpful. This is all fairly new to me but I want to continue to learn and make more videos in the future. Thanks!

I would use the standard mpeg-2 DVD Architect templates that Vegas offers as they are. If you are in the US, choose NTSC wide screen, but if you are in Europe or Australia like me, choose PAL. You can customise the template to include the audio track or render it separately as a AC3 stream.
Your video render settings should only be set to ‘good’, not best.
It might be a good idea to check your deinterlace method under your project properties = blend fields, and that you have selected Adjust source media to better match project or render settings.

If you want to make a standard video DVD, then you have to use the MPEG2 PAL or NTSC settings as Nigel described. Only Blu-ray can properly support HD resolutions like 1920×1080. DVD only supports standard definition (SD) resolutions of 720×576 (PAL, Europe) or 720×480 (NTSC, USA). That might sound horribly low, but it’s what all DVDs use and shouldn’t look too bad since you started with HD footage.
Watch out with the “adjust source media” option in the project properties. In my experience with Movie Studio HD 10, this only affects video, not still images. So if you have a project set up as HD, and then render to a DVD format you’ll end up with slightly cropped video and pillarboxed stills. It appears to be similar for NTSC size SD output.
Unchecking “adjust source media” causes a slight pillarboxing for all media when going from HD to PAL SD, which is probably better.
