    hey there, i got:
    i7 960 @3,2ghz
    gforce gtx 570
    24gb ram
    windows7 ultimate 64
    after effects cs5

    you can see part of my scene. the footage is ai with lots of pathes. then its “3d” with dof(big lens, ca 100px), motionblur and two lights with shadows on. i use trapcode 3d-stroke and sometimes the layerstyle stroke blinking as a highlight.

    as you can see in my render queue, the 1:20″-animation takes quite a while to render. the first renders i did with mcr OFF. then i read a bit about it and set ae to mcr with 2gb of ram for each core and just a litte left for other apps (can send you a screenshot of my settings, when the rendering is done). and another animation rendered with all cores at 100%. so it was quite a bit faster than without mcr.

    do you have any idea, why this animation is rendered only on one core? is there anything i can do about this?

    Not all effects are MP-aware. If such an effect is being used, then MP will not be engaged. Let’s take a look at your MP setup.

    here’s a page from the cs5.5 manual that has a lot of good info on multi-processing in ae, including a list of situations where mp will be disabled for rendering:

    note that settings that may work well for one comp, don’t necessarily work great for another. also, cs5 (i believe cs5.5 and earlier) don’t actually use hyper threading, so virtual cores that you may have are not being used as separate cores, and you should be able to use that fact when calculating the ram allotment per core.

    scratch that… i have read that cs5.5 and earlier don’t use logical cores despite what the mp preferences indicate, but i just played around the mp settings in cs5 and i definitely see a loss in performance when trying to increase ram and decrease cores…

    note this was a test on a single comp, and i may do further tests, but for now i’m going back to my previous settings.

    Your settings look OK to me. CS6 has better memory handling. Perhaps an upgrade will help.

    Having said that, with DOF and MB on, try a memory setup with fewer cores but more RAM per core. The rationale is that a compute-intensive comp will be slowed down if each core works with a small amount of RAM. Under compute-intensive cases, fewer cores but more RAM per core allows MP to work smoothly without having to frequently push RAM data onto the HD.
